Born in Smythesdale, Victoria, Australia, Alexander Hatrick arrived in New Zealand in 1875. He opened a grain mill with his brother-in-law 1880 and under the name of Walker and Hatrick traded extensively between Wanganui and Nelson. Alexander took over the business in 1886 when his brother-in-law retired and expanded into general merchandise.
As well as his merchant business Alexander Hatrick was prolific in expanding tourism in and around the Wanganui region and served as mayor from 1897 to 1904. He died on 30 July 1918.
