Alluvial gold was discovered in Bendigo Creek (South Island, northeast of Cromwell) in 1862 and by 1863 150 miners were working the area.
Despite several searches no reference to the Bendigo Gold Mining Company could be found. It is possible the company failed to attract enough shareholders and investment to actually start mining.
