Hallenstein Brothers opened their first store in Invercargill in 1863. Several other branches would open and Bendix Hallenstein would go on to establish The Drapery and General Importing Company (D.I.C.) department store chain. The New Zealand Clothing Factory was originally established by the Hallenstein brothers to supply garments to their stores.
