The business started off small, with only George Coles and three men producing and importing boots. By the start of the new century the factory was the largest of its kind on the North Island and, with the quality of their wares, had ceased to import boots.
Although the factory was known as the ‘Kaipai’ Boot Factory, ‘Kaipai’ was one of several trademarks and brands the company used, others included ‘Sewn Welts’, ‘Featherwight’ and ‘C’.
