New Zealand Refrigerating Company Ltd.

The New Zealand Refrigerating Company Ltd. was established in 1881 with the aim of killing livestock, mainly sheep, at Dunedin, freezing the carcass and transporting them for sale at Smithfield, London. In 1882 the S.S. Mataura carried the first shipment to London, comprising: 3844 sheep, 6 bullocks and 77 suckling pigs.  On top this they also carried hares, ducks, various species of fish, cheese, ham and a cask of penguin skins.
