Established in 1874 the University of New Zealand was the sole degree awarding university until it was dissolved in 1961. Although it retained its own name during the period the University of Otago actually awarded University of New Zealand degrees. The University of New Zealand was dissolved in 1961 and replaced with six degree awarding institutions: University of Otago, University of Canterbury, University of Auckland, Victoria University of Wellington, Canterbury Agricultural College and Massey Agricultural College.
